Tumakuru, August 22, 2019: Siddaganga Hospital and Research Centre (SHRC), a leading super-specialty hospital in Tumakuru announced the launch of Road Safety & Basic Life Support (BLS) Training Program for Tumakuru Police
Personnel today. The announcement was made by Dr. Shivanna Paramesh, Managing Director - SHRC in the presence of Sri Sri Siddalinga Mahaswamiji, Pontiff - Siddaganga Mutt, Dr. Umashankar, Chairman - SHRC and Dr. Kona Vamsikrishna, SP, Tumakuru Police. SHRC has partnered with Tumakuru Police, regarded as the Guardians of Tumakuru's roads, to spread awareness about the essential steps that need to be taken to support victims of roads accidents or other medical emergencies on the road.

Under this month-long program, SHRC will provide Tumakuru Police a 360-degree training program on BLS, a method of non-invasive emergency procedure to assist in the immediate survival in case of a medical emergency without the use of any medications. It aims to provide prompt medical interventions to save a victim within the ‘Golden Hour’, even prevent death. Golden hour refers to a window of time, after a traumatic injury in which a victim’s chances of survival is significantly higher if immediate medical attention is administered. BLS training includes providing a basic knowledge on life-saving techniques which will help prepare a person for emergency situations to care and save the lives of others. It also includes critical thinking and problem-solving skills and be able to work as part of a team to deliver the best care possible and improve patient outcomes.

*The Global Status Report on Road Safety 2013 estimated that more than 2,31,000 people were killed in road crashes in India every year. Approximately, half of all deaths on the country’s roads include vulnerable road users, mainly motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists. A heterogeneous mix that includes high-speed vehicles sharing the road space with road users as well as improper road infrastructure and vehicles that are in poor condition, all contribute to the high fatality rates seen on India’s roads. To address this issue, SHRC has launched the BLS program for the Guardians of Tumakuru Roads - first-responders, healthcare providers and public safety professionals to provide emergency medical care for every road accident victim.

Speaking on the announcement, Dr. Shivanna Paramesh, MD - SHRC said, “In India, most of the road accident victims are reported dead before admitting them to hospital. Keeping this in mind, we have associated with Tumakuru Police department and launched the BLS training program to empower and enable them to provide emergency medical care on road. With this month-long program, we will train and certify police personnel and our aim is to convey the importance of BLS training and ways to save as many lives as possible.”

“We are extremely happy that our very own doctors from Tumakuru have taken such a noble initiative to create awareness and empower this city's protectors. Tumakuru is one of the largest towns along the NH, and knowledge of basic life-saving skills in case of an emergency is of utmost important. SHRC, being one of the most highly equipped medical institutions in the city when it comes to handling trauma, spreading relevant awareness among the public is a critical responsibility. I appreciate them fulfilling this moral duty.”, said Sri Sri Siddalinga Mahaswamiji, Pontiff - Siddaganga Mutt.

Speaking about the importance of getting trained on BLS, Dr. Kona Vamsikrishna, SP, Tumakuru Police said, “Road accidents are quite rampant on Tumakuru road. Hence, the need to get trained on BLS and other first-aid methods to tackle any emergency medical situation is the need of the hour. We are thankful to SHRC for launching BLS program for every police personnel in Tumakuru and helping us acquire the skill to save lives more methodically. I am sure that through this program, we would be able to make a great impact and save every road accident victim.”

“It is indeed a necessity to create awareness about ways to support and take care of victims of roads accidents or other medical emergencies. In certain cases, the lives of the victims can be saved if the first responders are trained on administering first aid based on the medical emergencies. We are delighted to partner with Tumakuru Police to ensure that the rates of road accident victims are reduced and more lives are saved. At SHRC, our aim is to ensure that all necessary clinical treatments are provided to manage all kinds of medical emergencies and everyone are treated at Tumakuru itself with their near and dear ones beside them. With our quality of care, clinical expertise and affordable treatment costs, we can assure that patients need not travel afar for medical assistance anymore,” shared Dr. Umashankar, Chairman - SHRC.

During the event, SHRC also announced the empanelment with Arogya Bhagya Yojane - ‘Universal Health Coverage’. This initiative by SHRC will also facilitate a holistic approach of medical services including a health card ensuring discounts on OPD services of the hospital.
